The Urgent Need for Education Reform

As former President George W. Bush aptly noted, “In order to hold an institution and its leaders accountable, there has to be a way to keep score.” This article aims to do just that — evaluate our current educational framework, explore the gaps, and present effective solutions that are already making a difference.

FAQs

What is Work for Love?

Work for Love is a nonprofit organization founded in East Harlem, dedicated to empowering young adults by helping them secure jobs and develop essential skills. Through our comprehensive programs—available both online and in-person—we equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to contribute economically to their communities and build brighter futures for themselves.

Why do I want my student or young adult to work?

Encouraging your young adult to work can increase their future earnings by up to 40%, according to research. It also helps them develop essential life skills, such as responsibility and financial literacy, which are crucial for their personal and professional growth.

Why start with young adults?

Our experience shows that high school is an ideal time for students to start working. They have the flexibility to work 25+ hours a week after school and on weekends while still maintaining their academic responsibilities. To participate in our program, students must maintain at least a B average, ensuring they balance both work and education effectively.

Where will my young adult be working?

Our Hospitality in Schools program prepares young adults for success in established restaurants across various specialized roles. We understand the importance of location, and we work closely with students to find job opportunities that are conveniently located near their homes. Online digital work programs are in development.

How long does the program take to complete and when will we see results?

While we can’t guarantee a job, we are fully committed to working alongside your student to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed. Our Hospitality in Schools program lasts 3 months, during which we provide the essential skills, insights, and motivation needed not just to land a job, but to excel in it. Anyone can get a job; it’s keeping it that’s the challenge. We focus on giving your student the tools to not only secure employment but to thrive and grow in their role.
